  Wilderness Institute

Radford University's Wilderness Institute is a five week intensive course, offered in the summer term, that uses the outdoors as its teaching environment.  The course is designed to utilize experiential learning to promote the development of an individual's leadership skills and ability to work within a group.  The Wilderness Institute also exposes its participants to a variety of adventure activities while developing sound outdoor living skills.

Wilderness Institute also incorporates a broad overview of the field of outdoor recreation. Emphasis is placed on land management agencies and the social and environmental issues that influence management policy, as well as, different organizations and movements which deal with environmental issues. Students, after being exposed to a variety of examples, are given the opportunity to develop their own environmental philosophy and land ethic.

Many students enrolled in the Wilderness Institute also participate in the Wilderness First Responder class (non-credit course).  The Recreation, Parks and Tourism Department obtains instructors from the Wilderness Medical Associates to facilitate this program.  The course is eight days of intensive training for emergency care in a wilderness setting.  Topics covered include patient assessment, body systems, equipment improvisation, trauma, environmental medicine, toxins, back country medicine, and wilderness rescue.  Registration information is available on the Department website.

NOTE:  The Wilderness Institute plus 3 hours from available outdoor recreation courses would complete the outdoor concentration.  The Wilderness Institute is equivalent to (but not the same as) RCPT 230, 317, and 331.  However, taking the Wilderness Institute does not preclude one from taking RCPT 230, 317 and 331.
